Indonesia is committed to implementing a blue economy program, to support sustainable economic growth, provide jobs, and maintain the health of marine ecosystems. Thus, Indonesia targets the expansion of marine conservation areas to 30% of the total national waters, increasing the contribution of the maritime sector to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) by 15%, and employment to 12% of the total national workforce.
The existence of coastal ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses and coral reefs) plays an important role in sustaining the sustainability of natural resources. Currently, the instrument developed to support this is the Ocean Accounts (OA). An instrument that can provide data and information to formulate national policies in maintaining coastal and marine resources. Thus, on December 4-6, 2024 in Bogor, a training on Ocean Accounts (OA) was held to increase the capacity and expertise of marine protected area managers, namely staff of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The topics studied by the trainees included:
1. The fundamentals of OA, including the relationship between the oceans and people, natural capital, and ecosystem services valuation
2. OA implementation in Indonesia within its Ocean Development and Blue Economy contexts
3. Deep dives into OA modules — data collection, table compilation, and pilots case studies
The training program also invited prominent speakers and experts in the field of OA including the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries - Republic of Indonesia (Dr. Firdaus Agung), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) (Prof. Budy Wiryawan, Prof. Akhmad Fauzi), Central Bureau of Statistics (Ria Arinda, Mirta Dwi Wulandari, Efi Yuliani), Geospatial Information Agency of RI (BIG RI) (Diah Retno Minarni), and Yayasan Rekam Nusantara (Annisya Rosdiana). Not only that, the participants also sharpened their brains for 6 hours in a practical session facilitated by Agavia Kori Rahayu (Rekam Nusantara staff).
