Achieving the goal of sustainable use of sharks and rays is closely related to the capacity of parties involved in monitoring and controlling trade of this commodity, such as the Marine and Fisheries Training and Extension Center (Puslatluh KP) and the Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL), which both are under the coordination of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). One form of capacity building needed is to identify protected shark and ray species, which are threatened with extinction, and which are included in the CITES Appendix list. Of the many types of shark and ray products traded in Indonesia and in international markets, carcass is one of them. Carcasses are bodies of sharks and rays that have had their fins and heads cut off, making it difficult to identify the species due to the lack of available identification keys. To assist relevant parties in monitoring the shark and ray trade, the KKP through the Directorate of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (KKHL) has produced a shark and ray carcass identification book as well as an identification book for giant guitarfish and wedgefish, which are unique ray species in Indonesia that have been listed in the CITES Appendix. These two types of rays are unique because their body shape resembles a shark, thus identification errors often occur. Dissemination of identification books is carried out through training for verifiers from government elements, such as BPSPL and the Fish Quarantine Agency and Quality Control and Safety of Fishery Products (BKIPM), as well as shark and ray trade merchants. The training was held on 14-15 December 2021 in Denpasar, Bali, with support from The Center for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) – UK and the REKAM Nusantara Foundation. On the first day of training, participants were provided with theories regarding the laws and regulations for shark and ray conservation in Indonesia, identification of giant guitarfish and wedgefish, and identification of shark and ray carcasses; while on the second day, participants practiced carcass identification located at the cold storage facility owned by PT Putra Jaya Kota.
