Regarding the issue of shark and ray trade, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) as part of the Government, always strives to strengthen its role in the sustainable use and trade of sharks and rays. One way is to increase the capacity of KKP employees (capacity building) in monitoring the trade in sharks and rays, especially for protected and endangered species, as well as those listed in the CITES Appendix. Indonesia has a high biodiversity of sharks and rays, including the wedgefish and giant guitarfish which are currently on the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) Appendix list. These rays have a unique morphology that resembles that of a shark, causing the identification process to be complex at the species level. To assist in monitoring, the Government has developed a guide to the identification of wedgefish and giant guitarfish, as well as a guide to the identification of carcasses of sharks and rays. Carcass, which is the body of sharks and rays that have had their fins and heads cut off, is one of the shark and ray products traded in Indonesia and in the international market in addition to dried fin, hisite, skin, oil, meat and bones. Carcass identification is difficult because of the lack of identification features that can be found on the carcass and the lack of knowledge about carcass identification. In order to disseminate identification guidelines, verifier officers from the Marine and Fisheries Training and Extension Center (Puslatluh KP) attended training on 6-7 October 2021, as a form of collaboration between KKP, The United Kingdom's Center for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS UK) and the Rekam Nusantara Foundation. The activity was held using a hybrid method, namely offline at Hotel Santika Depok and online via the Zoom channel. The material presented is generally divided into two, namely theoretical sessions and practical sessions. The theoretical material covers the laws and regulations on shark and ray conservation in Indonesia, morphology of wedgefish and giant guitarfish, as well as shark and ray carcass identification techniques, while in the practical session, participants practice identifying types of wedgefish and giant guitarfish as well as recognizing the types of sharks and rays as carcasses. This training is expected to assist verifiers in improving identification skills to realize the sustainable and responsible use and trade of sharks and rays.
