An ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management (EBFM) is one solution for sustainable fisheries management. This approach attempts to integrate ecological and human factors into fisheries management such as the influence of fishing, food webs, habitats, and other ecosystem elements.  In order to achieve this, it is important to know the indicators that can characterize the impact and resilience of fishing systems. These ecosystem indicators are proposed to be applied to marine fisheries in selected ecosystems (coral reef, seagrass, mangrove) in Indonesia.

In order to increase capacity related to EBFM in Indonesia, the Rekam Nusantara Foundation held a Part III Training Workshop facilitated by Dr. Beth Fulton from The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia. This training was held on September 23-27, 2024 at The Haven Bali Seminyak, Bali which was attended by 12 participants from various academics such as the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Mataram University, Samawa University, IPB University, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

On the first day, the EwE model progress including data sources, key findings, and model adjustments were presented. Participants also discussed Ecopath with Ecosim model balancing until the second day. On the third day, participants discussed EBFM Metrics, aspects of EBFM, and socioeconomic data integrated into the model. On the fourth day, participants learned about using R for data processing. This training is expected to enable participants to understand more about the use of conceptual, qualitative, and quantitative ecosystem models. Participants can also recognize R tools for ecosystem modeling data analysis.
