Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono announced the re-imposition of the ban on the use of cantrang to catch fish through Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Regulation (Permen KP) No. 18 of 2021. In response to this, the Central Java Marine and Fisheries Service (DKP) and the Central Java Fish Catchment Center (BBPI) Semarang held socialization as well as technical guidance for cantrang fishery merchants by converting cantrang nets into pocketed pulling nets. This activity will be held on August 3-6, 2021, at the Klidang Lor Coastal Fisheries Port, PPP Tegalsari, PPP Tasikagung, and PPP Bajomulyo, Central Java Province. In principle, the construction of cantrang and pocketed pulling nets are similar. The difference lies in the shape of the mesh size, where in cantrang, the mesh is diamond-shaped with a size of 1-1.5 inches, while in pocketed pulling nets, the mesh is square with a size of 2-2.5 inches. Nets with a square mesh shape are still difficult to find in the market, so BPPI provides an example of a diamond mesh modification technique into a square. The method of catching fish with pocketed pulling nets is also different, namely that the net can only be pulled using a pulling tool (axle) with the ship in a stationary position (the main engine of the ship is stopped).

The head of the Central Java DKP said that the province would provide a letter of recommendation as an additional document to strengthen the capture fisheries business license (SIUP) and the fishing/transporting vessel permit (SIKPI). These two documents will be signed by the Head of PPP and the Head of the Supervision of Marine and Fishery Resources (PSDKP), so that the port authority can issue a letter of operation (SLO) and a sailing permit (SPB). Thus, cantrang vessels that have been converted into pocketed pulling net vessels can immediately operate again after almost three weeks of being unable to go to sea due to the ban on the use of cantrangs.
