Ecosystem-based approaches to fishery management (EBFM) examine the influence of fishing, food webs, habitats and the environment on fish species, by integrating ecological considerations and human factors to realize the sustainability of species and ecosystems. To increase the capacity of stakeholders related to fisheries management, Yayasan Rekam Nusantara unit Fisheries Resource Center of Indonesia (FRCI) in collaboration with IPB University, Murdoch University, and The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Australia held Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management II training: Ecosystem/Habitat Modeling.

The activity, supported by the Lenfest Ocean Program, was held at the Swiss-Belinn Hotel in Bogor on 1-3 May 2024. The training was attended by participants from the Directorate of Fish Resources Management of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and academics from several universities in Indonesia and Timor Leste.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Beth Fulton from CSIRO Australia. For three days, she shared knowledge about EBFM, including introducing the concept of ecosystem and habitat modeling, the types and sources of data needed, data analysis methods using Ecopath and Ecospace, and multi-species catch composition analysis. This training also presented a number of other speakers, namely Dr. Yudi Herdiana, Moh Natsir PhD, Siska Agustina, and Intan D. Hartati who presented material related to the implementation of EBFM, especially in the Indonesian context.
