Indonesia Timur merupakan salah satu lokasi yang masih menjadi “blindspot” pengelolaan hiu di Indonesia, hal ini disebabkan karena rendahnya pengetahuan masyarakat tentang isu konservasi hiu dan pari. Kondisi misinformasi ini mengarah ke situasi tingginya kemungkinan penangkapan illegal terhadap hiu dan pari, bahkan beberapa artikel ilmiah menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas shark finning masih marak dilakukan di Indonesia Timur.
Environmental Justice Foundation bersama Tempo Insititute dan Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. Embassy, Jakarta, menginisiasi peningkatan kapasitas jurnalis dan para aktivis ekosistem melalui kegiatan training dengan tema “Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUUF), and shark and ray product supply chains”. Kegiatan ini diselenggarakan pada tanggal 28 – 29 Maret 2022 di Manado. Perwakilan dari Fisheries Resource Center of Indonesia (FRCI), Benaya Simeon, M.Si., menjadi narasumber yang membawakan materi mengenai isu terkait hiu dan pari, seperti isu internasional, legalitas, hingga produk turunan yang sering diperjual belikan di masyarakat. Selain FRCI, isu konservasi hiu juga dipresentasikan Dr. Hollie Booth dari University of Oxford. Lokakarya ini melibatkan 24 wartawan dan aktivis dari Provinsi Sulawesi Utara, tim Humas dari Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, dan perwakilan dari pangkalan PSDKP Bitung – Sulawesi Utara.
