Mangrove ecosystems have a major role in physical, ecological, social, and economic aspects. In the physical aspect, mangrove forests are useful in protecting coastal areas from strong winds, waves, and abrasion. In the ecological aspect, mangrove forests often provide shelter and food availability for various organisms. Mangrove forests are also useful in the economic aspect where resources such as leaves and fruits can be processed into finished products such as food, textiles, and so on. The magnitude of the role of mangroves for nature and society is of particular concern to continue planting and preserving mangrove forests.
The exciting potential of mangrove forests is something that must be introduced and known by the wider community so that conservation efforts can continue. In early June, Rekam Nusantara Foundation-Fisheries Resource Center of Indonesia collaborated with renowned international filmmaker Nanang Sujana to document mangrove forest conservation activities in Central Java Province. Together with the team, we explored various cities from the South to North Coast in Central Java including Ayah Kebumen Beach, Demak Gojoyo, Demak Betahwalang, Kutawaru, Kampung Laut, and Jepara. A lot of important information was gained from this trip. The importance of mangrove forests for both nature and society is something that must be considered together. Conservation efforts with planting and continuous monitoring can be a good step to maintain the existence of mangrove forests.
