Data collection on crab fisheries in Central Java Province has become one of the focuses of implementing the GEF-5 project in WPPNRI 712. The Rekam Nusantara Foundation as a partner of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has met with district governments, provincial governments and supporting partners, to synchronize programs and collect information on matters that can be done in the context of crab management, one of which is strengthening data collection. The proposal to strengthen the crab data for three months was submitted by REKAM to FAO. The inaugural meeting between the parties involved was held virtually on October 30, 2021, where the REKAM team presented detailed activity plans to participants which included the PSDI KKP Directorate, KKP KKP Directorate, KKP Fisheries Research Center, KKP Data, Statistics and Information Center, Central Java Province DKP, Demak Regency DKP, FAO Indonesia, and IPB University. In its implementation, the data collection activity will involve a group of crab fishermen who are accompanied by a regional fishery instructor. The REKAM team will provide training to groups of fishermen on data collection techniques and filling out data collection forms, as well as provide support to extension workers in assisting data collection. This is done as an effort so that data collection can run on an ongoing basis and not solely depend on the initiative or financing of external parties. The availability of data that meets standards and is sustainable will greatly assist in formulating management policies. Based on the results of site visits and needs assessments, Tambak Polo Village was designated as the activity location. This village is located in Purworejo Village, Bonang District, Demak Regency, with a population of about 300 families and 174 fishermen. The types of crabs that are used as fishing commodities are Portunus pelagicus and Portunus sanguinolentus. The number of fishing fleets is 94 fleets with the dominant fishing gears are basic gill nets (2-5 miles capturing area) arad (2-3 miles), and sodo (1-3 miles). The information collected includes fishing trips and catch biological parameters. Fishermen or collectors make notes on a form which is then submitted to the extension worker to be copied into the Excel program and uploaded to a virtual data storage (Google Drive).
